Notes from the Bride: Dating

As a wedding photographer and videographer in the Tuscaloosa area, I love being a resource to couples. I get the honor of serving 20+ couples every year as they plan their wedding and work with me to develop the best strategies for amazing wedding photography or wedding videography. Here is a special personal article from one of our great guest blogger.

During our first couple years of marriage, I just assumed that our weekends would be filled with quality time together, dates, etc.  Oh boy, was I wrong! Sure we were living together in our home, working, and learning what it meant to be married. We even added to our family right away with the birth of our first child right before our first anniversary.  There was a lot of life to juggle along with trying to find time for a date.

Yes, we’d grab a meal or two out on the weekends, usually with a group of friends or another couple. It was fun, we enjoyed ourselves, but something was lacking…..missing.

This all lead to a conversation that I had with a friend who got married about seven months before us. She agreed that it was difficult to find the time to always have a date when life is happening.

Okay, so we weren’t the only couple dealing with this.

My husband and I then decided to not wait for our anniversary to make a change.

We were near the start of a new year, so we decided we needed a “resolution”.  Our new goal was to aim for 24 dates a year. Sounds easy, right? Because when you break it down, it’s just two dates a month.

So how did we do?

2016 was our first year doing this. We successfully had 20 out of 24 dates. This was amid the birth of our second child, life, etc.

In 2017, we did about the same.  We ended the year with 19 out of 24 dates.

As we’re currently in 2018, we’re a little behind on our dates as its May.  We’ve only had 6 out of 24 dates. There’s still plenty of time left in the year to get us as close to 24 as possible.

What helps us make this all happen?

-I make a list in my phone each year so we have a running record of our dates, and it really helps to keep us both accountable!  It’s simply the date, location, and if another couple or two was with us.

-If we happen to have a sitter during the day and both can make time for a lunch date, we do just that.

-For us, sometimes it’s easier to book a sitter during the week instead of on the weekend.

What would you recommend to ensure date night happens?
